Alums Win Four U.S. Titles

Results Opens in a new window

EUGENE, Ore. – Elise Cranny '18 swept the women's long-distance races while Stanford alums won four events at the four-day U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships which ended Sunday at Hayward Field.

Cranny's Stanford roommate Valarie Allman '17 won her fifth consecutive U.S. discus title and their Cardinal teammate Harrison Williams '18 won his first U.S. decathlon championship.

Cranny won her third U.S. 5,000-meter title on Sunday to follow up her first 10,000 victory on Thursday in 32:12.30. She won the 5,000 in 14:52.66.

For Allman, the reigning Olympic champion, her first throw of 216-11 (66.12m) was enough to win the competition. However, she put the competition out of the reach on her second throw, of 222-0 (67.66m).

In addition, Sean McGorty placed third in the men's 5,000 and 10,000, putting himself in position to make the national team for the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, in August if he can earn qualifying times before then. If McGorty is unable to reach the standard in the 10,000, Stanford alum Grant Fisher would replace him. Fisher placed fourth on Thursday and already has the qualifying standard.

Five members of Stanford 2023 team competed alongside 14 Cardinal alums. The highest placer among the 2023 Cardinal was rising sophomore Alyssa Jones, who took fourth in the long jump at 22-0 ¼ (6.71m) on Sunday. She also won the U.S. under-20 title a day earlier at 22-0 ¾ (6.72m).

Rising senior Cole Sprout was eight in the 10,000 and 16th in the 5,000. Melissa Tanaka, who earned her master's this spring in civil and environmental engineering, competed in the women's 1,500 and rising sophomores Juliette Whittaker and Roisin Willis competed in the 800, though none reached their finals.
