STANFORD, Calif. - Twelve Stanford gymnasts are set to vie for national titles and National Team berths at the 2023 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships, August 24-27 at SAP Center in San Jose, Calif.
The Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships serve as the selection competition for USA Gymnastics' National Teams for junior and senior women and men and will determine the men's rosters for the 2023 FIG World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium and the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, which will be held this fall.
This is the fourth time the state of California will host USA Gymnastics' artistic National Championships, the last being the 2017 P&G Gymnastics Championships in Anaheim. In this year's Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships, the California ties run deep with nearly 30 participating athletes either hailing from the state or training there at some point in their career.
This event looks to be the most star-studded U.S. championships of all time. The men and women who will compete have collectively won 12 Olympic medals, 50 World Championship medals and 46 national titles. Eleven are Olympians or Olympic alternates, 14 have been World Championships roster members and 12 have won a U.S. title at some point in their gymnastics career.
Cardinal gymnasts set to participate in the competition are Jeremy Bischoff, Brandon Briones, Taylor Burkhart, J.R. Chou, Ian Gunther, Asher Hong, Riley Loos, Brandon Nguyen, Curran Phillips, Blake Sun, Colt Walker and Khoi Young.
All 12 gymnasts previously competed at the Core Hydration Classic earlier this month, where Hong won the senior all-around title with a score of 85.305 to finish ahead of Young in second with an 83.424. Hong led the senior men's field on still rings (14.749) and vault (15.705), was second on floor exercise (14.749) and posted scores of 12.352 on pommel horse, 14.300 on parallel bars and 13.450 on horizontal bar. Young finished second on vault behind Hong (15.202), took second on pommel horse with a 14.872, and finished third on floor (14.550) to claim his second-place finish overall. Competing in select events at the Core Hydration Classic, Briones finished second on horizontal bar with a 14.062. Phillips, a 2022 graduate of Stanford, competed in three events, including winning the parallel bars title with a 15.456. Sun finished second to Phillips on parallel bars, registering a 15.194, before placing fourth overall on pommel horse with a 13.850.
Hong, Loos, Phillips, Sun and Young are all current members of the U.S. Men's Senior National Team, while Bischoff is a member of the Senior Development Team.
The Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships will span four days beginning Thursday, August 24 with Day 1 of junior men's competition followed by senior men. The men will showcase their skills for the final time on Saturday, August 26, when national champions will be determined by cumulative scores between Thursday and Saturday.
