STANFORD, Calif. – Opening the home slate from Cagan Stadium on Thursday night, No. 6 Stanford (3-0-0) recorded a 4-0 shutout over San Francisco (0-2-0).
The Cardinal finished the game with a 33-9 advantage in shots, putting 11 on frame.
Freshman Joelle Jung, making her first career start, got the scoring started for the Cardinal in the eighth minute, tapping in a goal at close range after a shot from Jasmine Aikey hit the cross bar and careened down into the box. The goal was Jung's second of her career.
Aikey made it 2-0 in the 30th minute as she controlled a rebound off a blocked shot from Maya Doms, bringing the ball down to her foot with her thigh before volleying it into the back of the net for her second of the season.
Just over two minutes later, Stanford extended the lead to three as a hand ball was called in the box against USF, sending Doms to the penalty spot where she sent a shot past the dive of Dons goalkeeper Kira Ybarra.
The Cardinal held the 3-0 lead and a 19-3 advantage in shots through the first 45 minutes.
Keeping control of the match in the second half, Stanford put up 14 more shots in the period, highlighted by the first career goal from freshman Erica Grilione in the 78th minute.
Making her collegiate debut on Thursday night, Grilione received a beautiful pass from sophomore Lumi Kostmayer just as she hit her stride at the top-left corner of the box. Grilione took one touch into the box and fired a left-footed shot to the near post where Ybarra got her glove on the chance, but saw her deflection sail into the net.
Stanford goalkeepers Ryan Campbell and Haley Craig split the time in goal, with Campbell posting two saves over the first 45 minutes. Craig entered for the second half, turning away three USF shots on goal to secure the combined shutout – Stanford's second clean sheet in three matches this year.
Ybarra allowed the four goals, but also managed seven saves, while facing the Stanford offensive onslaught.
The Cardinal will return to action on Sunday when it hosts Saint Mary's at 5 p.m.
