Women's Rowing Excels in Summer Competition

Former, current, and future members of the Stanford women's rowing team excelled in international competitions throughout the 2023 summer season.

"I'm so impressed with the dedication and focus of these athletes," noted head coach Derek Byrnes. "They not only helped elevate the Cardinal over the last several years but they also spent their summers continuing to grind away in an effort to represent their countries on the biggest stage. With sixteen future, current and former Cardinal representing eight different nations, this truly is an inspirational group."

The Cardinal saw its athletes compete at the Under-19 and Under-23 World Championships and the Senior World Rowing Championships throughout the summer months.

Highlighting Stanford's summer success were alumni Esther Briz Zamorano '22, Alie Rusher '18, and rising sophomore Célia Dupre '27 qualifying their respective boat classes for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France with incredible performances at the Senior World Rowing Championships. Rusher and partner Meghan Musnicki finished sixth in the women's pair A final, while Briz Zamorano and partner Aina Cid placed second in the women's pair B final (8th place). Dupre and her teammates from Switzerland recorded a fourth-place finish in the women's sculls A final.

At the Under-23 World Championships in Bulgaria, Stanford's members of the New Zealand coxed women's four Lucy Burrell '25 and Beckie Leigh '25 brought home a silver medal. In the same race, United States team members Quincy Stone '27 and Julietta Camahort '25 earned a bronze-medal finish.  Rounding out the medal finishes for Stanford was Lucy Black '24, who placed third in the women's eight as a part of Team Canada's boat, and incoming rower Sarah Marriot '28, who earned a bronze medal with Team Australia's four boat. Recent Cardinal graduate Katelin Gildersleeve registered an 8th-place effort in the Women's Single Sculls for Team USA and Iris Klok finished in fifth place with The Netherlands' eight boat.

The Cardinal's class of 2027 made a statement at the Under-19 World Championships in Paris, France, bringing home two medal finishes and three top-four performances. Matilda Drewett '27 earned a world championship with Great Britain's Double Sculls boat, while Madeleine Greenstock '27 recorded a silver-medal effort with Great Britain's four boat. Sofia Simone, a member of Team USA, helped her eight boat to a fourth-place finish, just .024 seconds off first place.

Additionally, Stanford took a trip to the Royal Henley Regatta in July for the first time since 2015. The Cardinal brought a four and eight boat to race in the Island Challenge Cup and Town Challenge Cup, respectively. Both Stanford boats made it to the semifinal races of their respective cups' racing.
