Third Place Match Bound at Stephens Cup

Leaderboard Opens in a new window

DALLAS — Tuesday's play at the Stephens Cup was a bit lighter than day one, which was suspended near the end of the second round due to darkness. After a few Stanford women's golfers finished up the second round, all teams concluded stroke play with the third round. It came down to the wire, with Stanford jumping all the way into the lead, before both Wake Forest and Texas jumped the Cardinal to make it to the championship on Wednesday. Stanford will face South Carolina in the third place match.

Paula Martin Sampedro was the star of the show for Stanford on Tuesday early, making a run for the individual championship. She did so on the front nine, where she recorded five birdies, including a birdie putt on the ninth hole that put her at 10-under and in sole possession of the lead. She cooled off on the back nine but finished with a 2-under 70. Martin Sampedro finished tied for fourth overall.

One of the biggest improvers on the day was Sadie Englemann, who was 1-over through two rounds but birdied on her first three holes in round three. She finished with five birdies and went 3-under 69 for her best round of the tournament, and led all Stanford golfers on the final day.

Kelly Xu finished the tournament as the leader on Par 3s, going 4-under. She finished the tournament sixth overall with a 1-under 71 on Tuesday, going 6-under across all three rounds.

Stanford as a team finished second in birdies with 58, behind only Wake Forest.

Match play takes place on Wednesday, with Stanford set to square off against South Carolina in the third place match. This marks the second year in a row for Stanford making match play at the Stephens Cup, after winning the championship against Wake Forest last year.
