Card Sweeps Fencer of Week Honors

STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford's Irene Yeu and Jared Hammerstrom were named Fencers of the Week by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for their performances at the Elite Invitational at Ohio State on Sunday.

Yeu, a senior epee specialist, went 9-3 on Sunday. Yeu went 3-0 against No. 5 Northwestern and 3-0 against No. 7 Penn. She also was perfect in three bouts against North Carolina in Stanford's 15-12 victory.

Yeu is a two-time All-American, including a second-team selection last season, and the defending MPSF epee champion. Stanford took on three top-10 teams and went 1-3 overall at Ohio State.

Hammerstrom, a freshman saber specialist, went 9-3 as Stanford went 1-3. Hammerstrom went 2-1 against No. 7 Penn and 1-2 against No. 9 Duke. Hammerstrom is 24-15 overall this season after leading the Cardinal men's team in victories at the season-opening Western Invitational.

This is the second MPSF weekly honor for each of the Cardinal men's and women's teams this season. Joy Yun was the Women's Fencer of the Week and Kai Rayle earned Men's Fencer of the Week honors, both after the Western Invitational at Air Force.

The Cardinal returns to action on February 3-4 at the Northwestern Duals.
