SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Connie Ma won the consolation singles title to highlight Stanford's participation at the ITA National Fall Championships on Sunday afternoon.
Ma, ranked 26th nationally, dropped her opener to No. 41 Julia Fliegner of Michigan, 6-2, 6-3, before reeling off four consecutive victories in the consolation draw.
She beat No. 51 Dana Guzman, 6-3, 6-2, on Thursday and ended up with the consolation championships by reeling off three consecutive three-set victories in the quarters, semis and final.
Ma knocked off Florida's Emily De Oliveira on Friday, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, and dropped the first set in both of the semifinals and championship, before rebounding to dispatch her opponents by big margins in the second and third sets.
She topped Utah's Marcela Lopez in the semis, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, and triumphed over Cal's No. 47 Jessica Alsola in the final, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Ma paired with Alexandra Yepifanova in the doubles draw and the 60th-ranked pair beat Miami's Xinyi Nong and Isabella Pfennig in the first round (7-5, 6-4) before falling to Oklahoma's Dana Guzman and Alina Shcherbinina in the Round of 16 (6-3, 6-4).
