STANFORD, Calif. - Cardinal gymnasts offered a sneak preview of the 2024 season on Saturday afternoon, competing in the Collegiate Gymnastics Association All-Stars East vs. West event. Gymnasts pre-record their routines and were judged on a 10-point system by the judges in the virtual event, which took place in partnership with Virtius.
Beginning in 2022, the CGA All-Stars event highlights the best gymnasts in the nation as they compete against each other by splitting into two squads, the East and the West. Teams were selected based on the results of the 2023 NCAA Championships. Khoi Young claimed an event title in the vault in last year's competition.
Stanford saw four gymnasts compete in the event as a part of Team West -- Taylor Burkhart, Asher Hong, Nick Kuebler, and Brandon Nguyen. Brandon Briones, J.R. Chou, and Khoi Young were also named to the all-star squad but did not compete, giving the Cardinal an event-leading seven representatives.
Burkhart and Kuebler kicked off the night on floor, as Burkhardt tallied an event bronze with a score of 9.625 while Kuebler scored a 9.175 in the first rotation. After an absence from the pommel horse rotation, the Cardinal returned to action with Hong and Kuebler showcasing their talents on rings, with Hong posting a 9.700 to place second in the event while Kuebler notched a 9.300.
In rotation four, Hong and Burkhart scored a 9.775 and a 9.550 on vault, respectively, before Nguyen made his only appearance of the event with a 9.100 on the parallel bar. Burkhart closed out the final rotation with a 9.325 on high bar as Team East tallied a narrow 228.775-228.500 win for its second consecutive victory.
Stanford kicks off the 2024 campaign on Jan. 13 at the Cal Benefit Cup as the Cardinal looks for its' fifth consecutive NCAA championship.
