No. 2 Stanford recorded a strong showing in its season-opening races at the 2023 San Diego Crew Classic Sunday. The Cardinal recorded four runner-up finishes to No. 1 Texas after impressive top heats finishes on Saturday. The Cardinal's closest finish of the day was in the race for the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy, as Stanford's second varsity eight boat finished just 1.722 seconds behind the Longhorns' boat. In three of the four final races, Stanford finished within two seconds of the eventual winner.
Stanford comes off one its best seasons in recent history, earning the program's first Pac-12 Championship since 2014 and its second straight runner-up finish at the 2022 NCAA Championships. The Cardinal returns six members of its varsity eight boat that also earned a second-place finish at the national championships.
