Stanford Outlasts Loyola Chicago

STANFORD, Calif. – Will Rottman and Moses Wagner combined for 36 kills to lead No. 8 Stanford in a 25-21, 25-17, 18-25, 25-27, 15-12 win over No. 10 Loyola Chicago, Monday, at Maples Pavilion.

As a team, Stanford (2-0) out hit Loyola Chicago (1-3), .436 to .275. The Cardinal finished with 58 kills, 34 digs, 8.0 blocks and nine aces. The Ramblers turned in 55 kills, 21 digs, 5.5 blocks and 11 aces.

Rottman reached the 20-kill plateau for the 16th time in his career, racking up nine in the fourth set alone. The fifth-year outside hit .515 with 20 kills on 33 swings with just three errors to go with six digs, two aces, a block and an assist.

Wagner finished with a career-high 16 kills on .444 hitting, his final coming on match point. The sophomore led the team with four blocks and tallied two digs and an ace.
 


For the match, there were 36 tie scores and 14 lead changes, including 18 tie scores and nine lead changes in the fourth.

Setter Nathan Lietzke totaled 44 assists and had two kills, six digs and two blocks. Playing in just his second match at libero, senior Luke Turner also collected six digs and four assists.
 


Fifth-year outside hitter Kevin Lamp recorded 10 kills on .500 hitting, four digs, two blocks and two aces, including one in the decisive fifth set. Middle blocker Ethan Hill added five kills, three blocks and matched his career-high with five digs, while middle blocker Nathaniel Gates chipped in with four kills, three blocks and three digs.

Sophomore Ryan DuRoss came off the bench to serve in four of the five sets, going on a run from the line in the second. He recorded back-to-back aces on his first two serves and had a pair of digs.
 


Loyola was led by opposite Miller Trubey, who had a team-high 11 kills on .471 hitting, four digs and five aces. Outside hitter Jake Read added nine kills, six digs and two aces for the Ramblers.

Stanford hits the road this weekend, traveling to No. 14 UC Santa Barbara for a pair of matches on Friday and Saturday on ESPN+.
