Fisher Breaks American Record

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Grant Fisher '19, a 12-time Stanford All-American, broke the American indoor record for two miles on Sunday at the Millrose Games at The Armory.

Fisher clocked 8:03.62 to finish second to Britain's Josh Kerr, who broke the world record with a time of 8:00.67. Fisher and third-place Cole Hocker both dipped under the 2014 U.S. record of 8:07.41 by Galen Rupp.

It was a two-person race after the pacesetters stepped off the 200-meter banked track, with Fisher maintaining the lead for much of the latter part of the race. Fisher led at the mile with a 4:03.37 split and finished with a 4:00.25. Kerr made his move with 400 to go and posted a 56.97 over the final two laps to Fisher's 1:00.24.

Fisher, a 2021 Olympian, now holds four American records. He own outdoor records in the 3,000, 5,000, and 10,000.

This was his first competition since leaving the Bowerman Track Club, moving to Park City, Utah, and training with his high school coach, Mike Scannell.

"When you've made a massive change, it's nice to have that validation that things are working," Fisher said to Taylor Dutch of RunnersWorld.com.

In the women's 800, 10-time Stanford All-American Olivia Baker '18 placed second in 2:01.91.

In the boys' high school mile, future Cardinal Byron Grevious placed third in 4:07.78.

Stanford alums own six American track and field records. Besides Fisher's four, Elise Cranny '18 holds the U.S. women's indoor 5,000 mark and Valarie Allman '17 holds the U.S. women's discus record.
