DOHA, Qatar – Stanford junior Jack Ryan placed 27th in the preliminary round of the 1-meter men's springboard diving competition at the World Aquatics Championships on Friday.
Ryan, the 2023 U.S. 1-meter runner-up and a two-time All-American, scored 270.10 points in his second World Championships.
His first dive, a forward 2 1/2 somersault 1 twist pike with a 3.2 degree of difficulty earned him scores of 5.5 to 6.5 and placed him 10th at 56.00 points. However, Ryan missed on his next two dives and dropped him to 39th.
On Dive No. 4, Ryan connected with a score of 52.50 on a back 2 ½ somersault tuck with a 3.0 degree of difficulty to move up six spots.
Ryan's sixth and final dive was his best, a reverse 1 1/2 somersault 2 1/2 twist free with a 3.0 degree of difficulty. That scored 63.00 points and moved him up another six places.
Ryan, third at the 2023 NCAA Championships, has the heart of his collegiate season coming in the next six weeks, with the Pac-12 Championships and NCAA Championships still to come.
The current Stanford team will have two more representatives at Worlds -- swimmers Andres Dupont of Mexico and Jonathan Tan of Singapore. Their competitions remain another week away.
