Round One Goes to Hawai’i

HONOLULU – In a top 5 battle, No. 5 Stanford fell at No. 3 Hawai'i, 25-21, 15-25, 22-25, 12-25, Wednesday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Hawai'i (9-1) hit .346 for the match, while holding Stanford (7-2) to a season-low .153 clip. The Rainbow Warriors out blocked the Cardinal, 11.5 to 4.0, and held a 6-5 advantage in aces.

Setter Nathan Lietzke totaled 32 assists to go with a season-high six kills on .556 hitting, three aces, three digs and a block. Libero Luke Turner tallied six digs and three assists.
 


Outside hitter Kevin Lamp and opposite Moses Wagner each had a team-high nine kills. Middle blocker Nathaniel Gates hit .500 with six kills on 10 swings with just one error. He also tallied a season-high five digs, two blocks and an ace.
 


Stanford has won the opening set in all nine matches this season. The Cardinal hit .355 in the opening set, but then was held to under .200 for the remainder of the match.

Middle blocker Ethan Hill registered five kills on .714 hitting in the first set, but then cooled off, finishing with seven kill overall.

Sophomore Theo Snoey started his third straight match at outside hitter, notching three kills, five digs and a block in three sets played. Sophomore Alex Rottman returned to the lineup in the second after missing the previous two matches. The outside hitter had three kills, four digs and a block.
 


Stanford utilized Theoren Brouillette, Adam Chang, Ryan DuRoss and Chris Kelly as serving subs on Wednesday. Kelly registered an ace, while Brouillette recorded a dig.

Hawai'i was led by Alaka'i Todd's match-high 17 kills on. 367 hitting, nine digs, three blocks and an ace. Senior Spyros Chakas added 15 kills on a .367 clip, eight digs, five assists, two blocks and an ace.
