STANFORD, Calif. - No. 4 Stanford paired a balanced offense with a stingy defense in a 10-9 victory over No. 9 Arizona State on Sunday afternoon at Avery Aquatic Center.
Stanford (14-3, 2-0 MPSF), which has won five straight and 13 of its last 14 overall, received a hat trick from Kamryn Barone while Sophia Sanders and Sophie Wallace chipped in with multi-goal games.
The Cardinal also produced a tremendous defensive effort, limiting the high-powered Arizona State offense to 30-percent shooting. The Sun Devils' Luca Petovary, who entered the weekend as the MPSF's leading goal scorer with 102 goals, found the cage only twice on eight attempts.
Stanford answered every charge in a competitive game, holding its largest lead of three goals on three different occasions.
Wallace's goal with 1:32 remaining before halftime gave Stanford a 6-4 edge at intermission.
Sanders scored her 30th goal of the season at the 4:25 mark of the third quarter, extending the Cardinal's lead to 7-4. She then opened the scoring in the fourth period with a goal at the 6:35 mark, making it 9-6.
Trailing 10-7, Arizona State scored twice and had possession with under 30 seconds remaining before Barone drew a key exclusion in the final seconds.
Maya Avital anchored the Cardinal's impressive defense, finishing with 11 saves.
