STANFORD, Calif. – Celebrating its senior class in winning fashion, Stanford men's basketball rolled to an 80-58 win over rival California on Thursday at Maples Pavilion.
Maxime Raynaud led the charge with 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while freshmen Kanaan Carlyle and Andrej Stojakovic scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. Spencer Jones scored 10 points, passing Anthony Brown and Claude Terry to move into 10th place on the all-time Stanford scoring list. Jones also tied for the program record in games played with 144, matching Brown and Chasson Randle.
Brandon Angel added nine points while Michael Jones had eight. Stanford made 12 3-pointers on 24 attempts, while hitting 47.4 percent of its shots on the night. The win gave Stanford its fifth in a row over Cal at Maples Pavilion.
The Cardinal won in a near wire-to-wire fashion, and it jumped out to an early double-digit lead, 25-14, after 10:30 of action. Cal managed to whittle the deficit to just six with 16 seconds left in the period, but Carlyle hit a three in the closing seconds to give Stanford a nine-point edge at the half, 41-32.
Stanford opened the second half on a 14-2 run to open up a 21-point lead, 55-34. Max Murrell scored five points in the stretch to lead the way. Stojakovic scored nine points in quick succession later in the period to keep the lead at 21, while Raynaud cemented the result with a pair of late field goals.
Stanford will next participate in the Pac-12 Tournament on Wednesday, March 13 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The Cardinal's seed and opponent are up in the air, while the first round of the event will be broadcast on Pac-12 Network.
