SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Two Stanford swimmers broke national records at the TYR Pro Series meet last week at the Northside Swim Center.
Stanford junior Ron Polonsky broke the Israeli record in the 100-meter breaststroke on Thursday and sophomore Hayden Kwan broke the 200 backstroke record for Hong Kong on Friday. They were among five active Cardinal to compete and they combined for eight personal bests in the four-day meet.
Polonsky, a 2020 Israeli Olympian, set a personal best of 1:00.39 in the 100 breast heats, and came back Thursday night to place third in the A final in 1:00.24. The time broke the national record of 1:00.33 by Kristian Pitschugin on June 18, 2022 at the World Championships in Budapest.
This was Polonsky's second Israeli record. He also has shares the 4x100 free relay standard of 3:14.03 from the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. Ron's sister, Leah, holds the Israeli record in the 200 butterfly and in three relays.
Kwan's record came in the 200 back heats, with a time of 2:00.22. That broke his own record of 2:00.70 from August 21, 2022, from the Hong Kong Open Championships. He also holds the national record in the 100 back at 55.61, from Aug. 20, 2022.
Kwan went on to finish fifth in the A final in 2:00.45.
Polonsky also placed fourth in the A final of the 200 individual medley in 1:59.06 on Saturday.
