Poised for Paris

Stanford alum Peter Chatain races in the U.S. eight boat at the Olympics beginning Monday.

PARIS – Stanford graduate Peter Chatain opens competition in the Olympic Games, beginning Monday.

Chatain competes for the United States in the men’s eight boat. The rowing competition begins July 29 at the Vaires-Sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.

This is the first Olympic Games for Chatain. In fact, only one member of the crew has Olympic experience. The Americans were fourth in Tokyo and last won a medal in this event in 2008 when the U.S. won bronze in Beijing.

Chatain earned his mathematics degree from Stanford and is a graduate student in computer science with a concentration in artificial intelligence. Chatain was selected to the national team a year ago, not long after his fifth and final collegiate season.
