STANFORD, Calif. – Rodgers Family Director of Gymnastics Tabitha Yim announced two promotions for her coaching staff in the 2025 season. Vince Smurro, entering his fourth season at Stanford, has been promoted to Associate Head Coach, while Hallie Mossett, starting her third season with the Cardinal, has been elevated to First Assistant Coach.
“We are thrilled to announce the promotion of Vince Smurro to Associate Head Coach and Hallie Mossett to First Assistant Coach,” noted Yim. “Vince and Hallie have been instrumental to our program’s success, making a significant impact on our team’s preparation, mindset, performance, and culture. Their dedication and leadership have helped foster a positive environment that encourages our team to reach their full potential both academically and athletically.”
Both Smurro and Mossett were integral parts in the Cardinal’s 2024 season, the most successful under Yim’s tenure. The Cardinal made the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2016, and became the first unseeded team to make nationals in its new format (since 2019) and the first unseeded team to make the national championship meet in any format since 2011. Stanford finished the season ranked fifth in the nation, its best finish since 2016.
Smurro has elevated the Cardinal’s vault and bars rotations to new heights, highlighted by sophomore Anna Roberts capturing the 2024 NCAA Vault Championship title. Roberts brought home the Cardinal's first NCAA individual championship since Elizabeth Price's floor title in 2018, just the fourth individual national title in Stanford women’s gymnastics history. His coaching expertise guided the Cardinal to a team total of 49.375 on vault at the California Tri Meet, part of Stanford’s ninth-best regular season score in school history. In 2024 alone, nine Stanford vaults scored above a 9.900 and six Cardinal gymnasts matched or recorded their career-best total on the event.
Stanford has made similar strides on bars, as throughout the 2024 season, 23 bars routines from the Cardinal earned above a 9.900 and six Stanford gymnasts earned or matched their career-best marks. The bars squad earned a season-best 49.525 in the team’s senior night meet against California, Stanford’s 11th-best bars rotation in its storied history. The bars excellence was part of Stanford’s second-best regular season score in school history and the program’s best team score in 20 years. In 2023, Smurro’s guidance led to then-senior Chloe Widner’s selection to the All-Pac-12 First Team on Bars, the program’s first All-Pac-12 honoree on bars since the 2018 season.
Mossett has made her mark on the Cardinal gymnastics team on floor, acting as the team’s choreographer and lead coach on the event. 23 of Stanford’s floor routines throughout the 2024 season surpassed the 9.900 threshold, while eight Cardinal gymnasts matched or earned a career-best score on the event. Mosset’s choreography was on display at the 2024 NCAA Regional Finals in Berkeley, Calif., as fifth-year Widner earned her first 10.000 on the event to send the Cardinal to the NCAA Championships for the first time in nine seasons. Two team totals throughout the 2024 season ranked among the Cardinal’s best, as Stanford tabbed a score of 49.600 in its historic meet against California (March 10), good for the fifth-best floor rotation in program history, and just seven days later, recorded a team score of 49.550 at the California Tri Meet (March 17), the tenth-best floor mark in school history.
“It has been a privilege to work alongside Vince and Hallie, and we are committed to honoring the legacy of those who came before us,” said Yim. “Together with our dedicated staff and team, we are excited to write the next chapter in Stanford Women’s Gymnastics history.”
