Stanford claims first ACC Victory at Syracuse

       

 Emmet Kenney hit a 39-yard field goal as time expired to lift Stanford over Syracuse 26-24 on Friday night, giving the Cardinal their first Atlantic Coast Conference victory.

A 13-yard strike from Kyle McCord to Jackson Meeks gave Syracuse (2-1, 1-1 ACC) a 24-23 lead with 3:13 to go, but Ashton Daniels drove the Cardinal (2-1, 1-0) down the field for the winning score.

Kenney also had fields goals of 38, 51, and 35 yards.

Safety Mitch Leigber intercepted a McCord pass intended for Dan Villari at the Stanford 29-yard line and returned it for a score, giving the Cardinal a 20-10 lead with 4:16 to go in the third quarter. McCord ran 19 yards down the right side and leaped into the end zone from 1 yard out, pulling Syracuse to 20-17.

Daniels was 23-of-38 passing for 178 yards and a touchdown to Elic Ayomanor, who had seven receptions for 87 yards.McCord was 27 of 42 for 339 yards, but he was picked off twice leading to 10 Stanford points. He was also sacked four times.

The Cardinal defense held LeQuint Allen, Syracuse’s leading rusher, to 25 yards on eight carries. Syracuse gained just 26 yards on the ground. Trebor Pena had 10 receptions for 101 yards.

Up next, the Cardinal play their second straight road game against Clemson on Sept. 28.

Elia Rubin had a season-high 21 kills to power No. 2 Stanford past No. 11 Kentucky, 25-19, 25-19, 28-30, 25-20, Saturday, in Maples Pavilion.

Stanford closed out its nonconference slate with an 8-1 record. The Cardinal hit .263 as a team while holding Kentucky (6-5) to a .181 clip. Stanford registered seven aces, 57 digs and 8.0 blocks, while the Wildcats finished with four aces, 45 digs and 9.0 blocks. 

Rubin added eight digs, three assists and two aces to her match-best 21 kills. Setter Kami Miner turned in her seventh double-double of the season with 40 assists and 11 digs. The senior also posted a season-high five kills on .714 hitting.

First ACC Victory

   

Goals from Jasmine Aikey and Maryn Wolf secured the Cardinal’s first win in ACC play, as No. 1 Stanford (9-1-0, 1-1-0) shut out NC State (3-6-1, 0-2-0) 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Aikey, who has started every match this year at center back, moved up from the defensive line to start the second half and broke a scoreless match with a goal in the 58th minute. Sophomore Joelle Jung delivered a perfect cross into the box where Aikey headed it home for her 22nd career goal.

The game-winner was the seventh of Aikey’s career.

Wolf added an insurance goal in the 79th minute, running onto a through ball from Eleanor Klinger toward the end line. The native of San Diego, Calif. beat NC State goalkeeper Olivia Pratapas to the near post for her second tally of the season.

88th-Minute Equalizer Earns ACC Point

    

 

No. 1 Stanford earned a 2-2 draw with Duke on Sunday night, coming back from a two-goal deficit to earn a point in ACC play. The Cardinal moves to 7-1-1 on the season and stays undefeated in the ACC at 2-0-1 while Duke moves to 3-2-2 on the season and 1-1-1 in conference play. 

The game was the first-ever ACC game held on The Farm and the crowd came out in emphatic fashion. The attendance of 2,268 fans was the highest-attended men’s soccer game at Stanford since 2019.

“It was a fantastic game of soccer and the huge crowd we had was treated to an awesome game, packed with action and obviously excitement from start to finish,” said the Knowles Family Director of Men’s Soccer Jeremy Gunn. “We were frustrated because it was a pretty even game; we’d created chances and they’d created chances, but they were able to pick us off twice.”

An impressive first weekend on the collegiate tour for Jay Leng, earning a top-15 finish with two rounds in the 60s and a team-best 10 birdies on the weekend at the Fighting Illini Invitational. Stanford came in tied for sixth with an 8-over 84b8. 

The San Diego native turned in his second sub-70 scorecard of the weekend in round two with a 3-under 67, the team's best round of the tournament. Leng then capped it off with a 3-over 73 in his final trip around Olympia Fields.

Third Place MPSF Invite Finish

  

The No. 2 Cardinal closed out a strong weekend at the MPSF Invitational with a 15-10 win over No. 6 California, finishing third in the tournament. Stanford moves to 9-1 on the season with the win.

Stanford led from start to finish, taking a 10-5 lead into halftime. The Card shut out California in the third quarter, extending the lead and holding on for the win. Riley Pittman led the way for the Cardinal attack, scoring four times and assisting twice.

Pittman was the only Stanford player with multiple goals, as 12 members of the Card scored in a full-team barrage.

The Cardinal heads to southern California next weekend for a pair of top-10 games against No. 8 UC Irvine and No. 4 Pepperdine. Saturday’s game in Irvine and Sunday’s game at Pepperdine both start at noon PT.

Stanford displayed a dominant offensive performance on Friday afternoon en route to a 4-0 shutout victory over Bellarmine. The Cardinal moves to 5-1 ahead of its ACC debut this weekend, while Bellarmine drops to 2-4 on the year. 

Cara Sambeth scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season to highlight four different goal scorers in the contest, rattling the cage alongside Alayna BurnsScout Butler and Allison KuzykJenny O'Grady and Liv Martin each tallied a pair of assists on penalty corner chances, while Daisy Ford earned the win between the posts. 

"No matter who the opponent is, we can score goals and we have multiple different goal scorers," head coach Roz Ellis said. "The team came into a focus of playing moment by moment and dominating each of those moments. It was exciting to see the team go up early and establish that dominance throughout the game."

Stanford kicked off its 2024 season with three regattas over the weekend. The Cardinal topped the field at the PCCSC Match Race Championship, took second in the Allstate Women’s Sugar Bowl, and fourth in the Allstate Open Sugar Bowl.

“I have a lot of faith in this boat to do the work required to win a championship,” said head sailing coach Chris Klevan on the conference championship-winning match race team. “Winning the conference was the first necessary step towards that goal.”

The Cardinal was decisive from start to finish in the regatta, taking all four wins against its opponents in both round robins. Stanford competed against USC, Hawaii, Cal State Maritime, and California in the event and came out on top, with Hawaii taking second and Cal State Maritime finishing in third.
