Cardinal Draws Pacific

Dylan Groeneveld nets his second goal of the year in 1-1 tie with Tigers

STANFORD, Calif. - No. 2 Stanford outshot Pacific, 30-2, on Monday evening but had to settle for a 1-1 draw with the Tigers after a 70th-minute equalizer from Dylan Groeneveld

The tie marked the Cardinal's fourth of the season, bringing their record to 8-2-4. Pacific moves to 2-6-4 on the year.

"It was an incredible night of frustration," said the Knowles Family Director of Men's Soccer Jeremy Gunn. "We created so many chances and we just have to bury them. We had enough good chances to win three games tonight."

Stanford was the dominant side from wire to wire, spending an overwhelming majority of the contest on the attacking end. However, it was Pacific who took the early advantage with a 39th-minute score from Zion Vaughn.

It was the first of only two shots that sophomore goalkeeper Rowan Schnebly would see on the night, as the Tigers would take a 1-0 lead into the break.

"We've been all over them and found ourselves a goal down again, which is very frustrating," Gunn added. "We had done everything to create chances but we just have to put the ball in the net. It's that simple."

Trailing by one, Stanford continued to force the issue with 20 shots recorded in the second half, breaking through in the 70th minute with Stanford drew even with Dylan Groeneveld heading home a Will Cleary crosser. The goal was Groeneveld's first of his career.

The equalizing opportunity was sparked by a red card issued to Pacific's Ezekiel Padilla just a minute earlier, leaving the Tigers to play the final 21 minutes of the game a man down.

The Cardinal continued to press for the game-winner, but the Pacific defense held firm in the dwindling moments to hang on for the draw.

Alfonso Tenconi-Gradillas paced Stanford with five shots in the contest, including an attack that rang the crossbar in the closing minutes of the contest, while Noah Adnan and Shane De Flores tallied four with a shot on target apiece.

Stanford finished with 12 attacks on target in what was a lopsided shooting tally, while also holding a 10-1 advantage on penalty corners.

The Cardinal returns to Cagan Stadium for a pivotal ACC battle on Sunday, playing host to No. 7 North Carolina at 5 p.m. PT on ACC Network.
