Stanford in the NFL: Week 10

Christian McCaffrey made his season debut while leading the 49ers to victory

CHRISTIAN McCAFFREY is back. And the All-Pro running back helped the San Francisco 49ers to an important victory over Tampa Bay, catching a 30-yard pass that led to a key touchdown in a 23-20 victory.

With McCaffrey, the NFL’s leading rusher last year, and Los Angeles Chargers tight end Tucker Fisk making their season debuts, 27 Stanford alums have played in NFL regular-season games this year. In Week 10 alone, six Stanford alums played tight end.

The following is a summary of how former Cardinal fared in Week 10 of the NFL season:

San Francisco starting running back Christian McCaffrey was activated from the injured reserve list and made his season debut in the 49ers’ dramatic 23-20 victory at Tampa Bay. With the 49ers trailing 17-13 midway through the fourth quarter, Brock Purdy faced pressure and heaved the ball skyward down the right sideline where McCaffrey caught it in stride after shaking off a linebacker with a double move. The 30-yarder set up a touchdown pass to George Kittle and the 49ers never trailed thereafter.

McCaffrey caught six passes for 68 yards and ran 13 times for 39 yards. Returning from an Achilles tendon injury, McCaffrey opened the game with a six-yard run and was in on 56 (88 percent) offensive plays.

Minnesota starting nose tackle Harrison Phillips recovered a fumble on a key play in the Vikings’ 12-7 victory at Jacksonville. On the Jaguars’ second play from scrimmage after the Vikings took a 9-7 fourth-quarter lead, Jacksonville quarterback Mac Jones fumbled the snap and Phillips fell on the ball at the Jaguars’ 25. Moments later, Minnesota added a field goal for a 12-7 lead. Phillips had two tackles while playing 29 defensive snaps for the Vikings, who remained one game behind NFC Central-leading Detroit. Jacksonville starting offensive left tackle Walker Little played every offensive snap and one on special teams.

New England starting tight end Austin Hooper caught three passes for 64 yards in the Patriots’ 19-3 victory at Chicago. Hooper caught a deep pass down the right sideline from Drake Maye for 28 yards in the first quarter to help set up a field goal for a 3-0 lead. Hooper also turned a short pass into a 24-yard gain to help set up a touchdown for a 10-3 second-quarter Patriots’ lead. The plays were New England’s longest of the game. Hooper played 41 offensive downs and six on special teams.

Kansas City starting strong safety Justin Reid had seven tackles in the Chiefs’ 16-14 victory over visiting Denver. Reid had three solo tackles, a tackle for loss, and a quarterback hurry for the undefeated Chiefs (9-0). On the third play of the game, Reid stuffed Marvin Mims Jr. for a four-yard loss on a third-down screen pass to help set the tone for the Chiefs’ defensive effort. Reid played 56 (97 percent) of Kansas City’s defensive snaps, plus four on special teams.

Arizona starting receiver Michael Wilson caught three passes for 24 yards in the Cardinals’ 31-6 victory over the visiting New York Jets. The resurgent Cardinals have won four in a row and lead the NFC West with a 6-4 record. Wilson was in on 39 offensive plays and all three of his catches helped along scoring drives. Cardinals’ tight end Elijah Higgins caught two passes for 13 yards. Higgins was in on 29 offensive plays and four on special teams.

Miami’s Jake Bailey punted three times for a 44.7 average in the Dolphins’ 23-15 victory at the Los Angeles Rams on Monday night. Bailey had a 51-yard punt that went out of bounds at the 9-yard line and earlier had a 48-yard kick. For the Rams, kicker Joshua Karty made five of six field-goal attempts, including makes of 55 and 53 yards. His only miss was wide right from 57. Rams’ tight end Colby Parkinson was in on 11 offensive plays and seven on special teams.

Houston starting tight end Dalton Schultz caught three passes for 66 yards in the Texans’ 26-23 loss to visiting Detroit on Sunday night. Schultz had three of Houston’s five longest plays, including a 32-yarder off a short pass from C.J. Stroud in the third quarter. Schultz was in on 48 offensive plays for the Texans who continue to lead the AFC South, at 6-4.

New York Giants starting inside linebacker Bobby Okereke had 11 tackles, including four solo, in a 20-17 loss to Carolina in Munich, Germany, on Sunday. Okereke was in on 57 defensive snaps (95 percent) and four on special teams. Okereke ranks 16th in the NFL in tackles, with 75.
