Victories Highlight Meet for Card

Ron Polonsky and Misha Andriyuk were victorious against Cal and Arizona State

Results

TEMPE, Ariz. – Stanford freshman Misha Andriyuk showed a glimpse of his talent in his best event by winning the platform diving competition during the second and final day of Stanford’s double dual men’s swimming and diving meet against Cal and Arizona State on Friday.

The three diving events, unfortunately for Stanford, did not count in the meet scoring, meaning the Cardinal could not benefit from Andriyuk’s victory on Friday or Jack Ryan’s in the 1-meter springboard on Thursday, though they did count for NCAA Zone qualifying.

No. 9 Stanford lost to No. 1 Cal, 181-172, and to No. 6 Arizona State, 223-130, in its first scoring meets of the season, at ASU’s Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.

Andriyuk is among the top under-20 platform divers in the world and will represent the U.S. at the World Junior Championships in Rio de Janeiro from Nov. 24-Dec. 1. He was second at the 2024 U.S. Junior Nationals and seventh at the Olympic Trials.

In his first platform competition as a collegian, Andriyuk scored 380.30 points, giving him a 56.80-point margin of victory over runner-up Jack Clark of Cal. Andriyuk had his best score on his fourth dive when he reached 91.80 on a reverse 3 ½ somersault tuck – a dive that had his highest degree of difficulty (3.40).

Andriyuk was joined by Olympian Ron Polonsky among Stanford winners Friday. Polonsky won the 200 individual medley in 1:43.76. It was among 16 NCAA ‘B’ standard times achieved by Stanford swimmers on the day.

There were two personal records set by Stanford swimmers, including 1:55.16 in the 200 breaststroke by freshman Go Nagaoka, who placed fourth in a ‘B’ qualifying time.

Stanford achieved its first NCAA ‘A’ standard, in the first event of the day, the 800 free relay. The Stanford team of Andrei Minakov, Andres Dupont Cabrera, Rick Mihm, and Henry McFadden clocked 6:15.51 for second. The ‘A’ cutoff is 6:16.02.

Stanford’s next action is the Texas Diving Invitational on Nov. 15-17 in Austin, where Andriyuk, Ryan, and Hunter Hollenbeck are scheduled to compete.
