Stanford swimmer breaks short-course mark in 4x100 medley relay

BUDAPEST, Hungary – Stanford senior Andrei Minakov is a world-record holder.

Minakov was part a team of neutral athletes from Russia that broke the world record in the 4x100-meter medley relay at the Short Course World Championships on Sunday at Duna Arena.

Minakov completed his butterfly leg in 48.80 to help his team to a time of 3:18.68, breaking the mark of 3:18.98 set by the U.S. and Australia at the 2022 World Short Course Championships.

Miron Lifintsev led the relay off with a 49.31 in the backstroke. Kirill Prigoda‘s breaststroke leg was 55.15, followed by Minakov. Rgor Kornev anchored the relay in 45.42 in the freestyle.

On Saturday, Minakov was sixth in the 100 fly final, swimming 49.21. He was sixth overall in the semifinals at 49.19 on Friday and eighth overall in the heats, at 49.58.

On Thursday, Minakov was fourth in the 200 fly final, in 1:50.39. In the heats, Minakov was sixth overall, in 1:50.62.

Minakov, a native of St. Peterburg, Russia, is a 19-time All-American and was the 2022 NCAA 100-yard fly champion. He holds Stanford records in eight events – the 100y free, 200 free, 100 fly, 200 fly, 400 free relay, 800 FR, 200 medley relay, and 400 MR.

Minakov next competes for Stanford on Saturday, January 18 when the Cardinal plays host to USC at Avery Aquatic Center.
