Your quarterly Stanford Athletics update from Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics Bernard Muir

Dear Cardinal Faithful,

As our student-athletes prepare to wrap up the first quarter of the 2024-2025 academic year, there are many achievements to celebrate, challenges to examine, and exciting opportunities ahead for the new year. This installment of the Athletic Director’s Newsletter will provide the latest updates from our department as we navigate the ever-changing world of collegiate athletics and continue our mission of developing champions in life through a world-class student-athlete experience.

FALL SPORTS UPDATE

This fall marked a historic chapter in the story of Stanford Athletics as our fall programs debuted against new opponents in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The Farm hosted exciting conference opponents from across the country, highlighted by major home victories, including a late game-winning goal that secured a win against No. 2 North Carolina for women’s soccer, a midfield goal gone viral for men’s soccer to take down Notre Dame, a victory over No. 3 Louisville by women’s volleyball to complete an undefeated home season in Maples Pavilion, and football’s comeback win over the No. 22 Louisville Cardinals to celebrate the program’s senior night.

We currently have several programs in the hunt for national excellence, including women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, and men’s water polo. Several of these teams have postseason competitions here at home on The Farm, and I hope you will come out and support them as they compete for championships.

While our student-athletes stepped up to the challenge and thrived in a new conference, our coaches and staff collaborated on the most obvious adjustment with the ACC transition: travel. Utilizing scientific studies, research, and experience, under the guidance of our sports medicine and performance experts, our programs are learning what works best for each team as they travel greater lengths to compete and achieve at the highest levels. We're refining ways to mitigate the impact of student-athletes being away from campus, such as recording select classes and enhancing communications with faculty about travel. I’d like to express a special thanks to our faculty athletics representative, Professor Jay Mitchell from the law school, who, alongside Provost Jenny Martinez, has been instrumental in helping us prepare for this new environment of competition.

With increased travel for many of our student-athletes, the network of support on The Farm is vital to not only their athletic and academic success, but also to their well-being and personal development. This Stanford Momentum feature demonstrates how our incredible team of professionals and experts in sports performance, athletic training, sports psychology, nutrition, sports medicine, and academic advising & student-athlete success and well-being use research and data to provide the best possible experience and resources to nearly 900 Cardinal student-athletes each year.

NATIONAL LANDSCAPE

As you are likely aware, the landscape of collegiate athletics has experienced consistent and seismic change. Recent years have seen the introduction of the transfer portal, the advent of the Name, Image & Likeness (NIL) era, and now a proposed settlement to the House vs. NCAA case which would provide institutions the ability to increase scholarship offerings and share departmental revenues with student-athletes. As we work to plot the best path for Stanford Athletics, I am so grateful for the partnership, leadership, and support that we consistently receive from President Jon Levin, Provost Martinez, and the Board of Trustees. There is much work to be done, but we are energized by the challenge of continuing forth Stanford’s legacy of athletic excellence.

WELCOME HOME, ANDREW!

I was extremely excited to share the news with our Cardinal Faithful recently that former Stanford quarterback and NFL standout, Andrew Luck, accepted the position of Stanford Football General Manager. In his new role, Andrew will oversee the Cardinal Football program, including working with Coach Taylor on recruiting and roster management, and with our athletics and university leadership on fundraising, alumni relations, sponsorships, student-athlete support, and stadium experience. As one of the most transformative student-athletes in school history, Andrew produced a record-setting collegiate career while leading the Cardinal to national prominence. I could not think of a person better qualified to guide our football program through a continuously evolving landscape, and I am thrilled that Andrew has agreed to join our team and come home to The Farm with his family. This change represents an innovative approach to the way we operate our football program and compete nationally, leading the way in how we adapt to an ever-changing competitive environment.

HONORING A LEGEND

On Nov. 10, 2024, we honored a true legend and game-changer. In celebration of her recent retirement from coaching, Stanford Athletics paid tribute to former women’s basketball head coach, Tara VanDerveer, by unveiling the newly renamed Tara VanDerveer Court at Maples Pavilion. In 38 seasons at Stanford, Tara led the Cardinal to three NCAA championships – 1990, 1992, and 2021 – and 14 Final Fours. For nearly four decades, she has tirelessly served as an advocate for women’s sports and the truly unique student-athlete experience offered on The Farm. Even since her retirement from coaching, she continues to assist the Athletic Department this year as a Special Advisor, providing unparalleled counsel, advice and mentorship to our coaches and staff. If you couldn’t make it in person, check out the video below of the celebration!

BUCK/CARDINAL CLUB 90TH ANNIVERSARY

This year we also celebrated the 90th anniversary of the Buck/Cardinal Club. In 1934, a group of dedicated Stanford alumni and friends formed the "Tiny Buck of the Month Club" to raise funds covering tuition costs for “capable, worthy, and needy student-athletes,” later shortening the organization’s name to the "Stanford Buck Club.” The Stanford Buck Club joined forces with the Cardinal Club, a group dedicated to funding scholarships for women’s sports programs on the Farm, in 1987 creating what is the current Buck/Cardinal Club.

Over its 90-year history, the Buck/Cardinal Club community of donors have changed the lives of countless student-athletes by funding critical scholarships and necessary resources, including academic advising, sports performance, athletic training, nutrition, equipment, sports psychology, and travel to support Cardinal student-athletes as they compete at the highest level.

Join me in celebrating the Buck/Cardinal Club’s historical milestone and thanking the donors who lead the way in supporting student-athlete success, while we build upon 90 years of dedication with a reinvigorated philanthropic commitment to Cardinal scholar-athletes. Head to buckcardinal.com to learn more about the Buck/Cardinal Club and how you can support today!

UPCOMING MATCHUPS

I hope to see you cheering on the Cardinal soon in exciting matchups as our fall programs compete for national championships in postseason play and both basketball teams play locally in marquee matchups. Men’s basketball faces off against Oregon at the SAP Center on Saturday, Dec. 21 for the San Jose Tip-Off, while women’s basketball heads to Chase Center in San Francisco to take on Ohio State for the Invisalign Bay Area Women’s Classic on Friday, Dec. 20. Thank you for your continued dedication, commitment, and support of Stanford Athletics. You make Stanford the Home of Champions.

I wish you and your family a happy and healthy holiday season!
