Card Essentials: Brooke Demetre

Welcome to the latest installment of Card Essentials, where Stanford student-athletes share the stories behind the items they carry every day, big or small. We caught up with Brooke Demetre, a forward for Stanford women's basketball as the team wraps up their ACC schedule. Demetre is a 3 time conference champion, and former Gatorade California Player of the Year. Brooke took some time to show us what she has with her everyday and what each item means to her.

GoStanford.com: Out of everything, what here can't you live without?
Brooke Demetre: "Something always by my side is a sketchbook. I have probably five or six sketchbooks in my room. Each one's a little different. One's just like doodles, and another is possible tattoo ideas. I have a tattoo on my bicep that I drew. It's of some flowers that merge into human forms, like an eye and lips. I'm a design major, so I love being creative and designing my own things, drawing inspiration from things I observe, or just out in nature. 

GS: Tell us about the candle! Are you a big candle person?
BD: "This is my favorite candle. The name of it is Volcano Capri Blue from Anthropology. I first got into it because this is my mom's favorite candle, and she always lit it around the house when I was younger. As soon as I went to college, I got this, and I've been lighting it in my room ever since. It's my favorite candle and will always be my favorite candle."

GS: Do you have any game-day essentials in here? What do you have to have on game days? 
BD: "My slick back combo. If my hair isn't down, it's in a slick back, probably 90% of the week. I love a slick back bun or pony. That's my go-to game-day hairstyle. But my combo is a styling cream, a wax stick, and then a bristled brush to really keep back my frizz. I always need my slick back combo.

GS: We noticed the coffee mug! Talk to us about that!
BD: "I love coffee. I've been drinking coffee since sixth grade. Probably everybody said it would start my growth. But that is not true. I have an espresso machine that I got for Christmas when I was in high school. It was probably one of the best gifts I've ever gotten. My favorite pod is called Bianco Forte from Espresso. I probably have three of these a day. I just drink it black. But love coffee, and can never live without coffee.

GS: We see the hot sauce... are you a spicy food person?
BD: "I need my hot sauce. I put hot sauce on almost every single dish. This one is from Costco. It is a peach ghost pepper hot sauce and it's very hot. The hotter, the better. I like it when it makes me sweat and almost numbs my taste buds. Call me crazy, but I love hot sauce. I need it for everything.

GS: We love the jewels on your headphones! Can you tell us about them?
BD: "I got them for the conference tournament last year. I bedazzled them with my initials and my number. I love to bedazzle in my free time. I'm constantly listening to music on the way to class, to practice, to games. I like a variety of music. Lately, I've been listening to a lot of blues and jazz so I've kind of been on that vibe recently.
