BOSTON Patrick Koon set the Stanford freshmen indoor track and field record in the 5,000 meters on Saturday, breaking a mark held by one of Stanford’s all-time greats.

Koon ran 13:43.69 at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on the 200-meter track at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center. The time, a personal best by 16 seconds, bested the 2009 mark of 13:48.26 by Chris Derrick, a 14-time All-American.

Koon, from Tallahassee, Florida, also became the fastest American true freshman in NCAA Division I this season. He also takes over the No. 4 spot on Stanford’s all-time frosh list that includes outdoor as well as indoor marks.

Cole Sprout ran 13:30.33 to lead a Stanford contingent that had four under 13:45. Lex Young ran 13:38.49 and Thomas Boyden 13:39.18.

James Dargan was another freshman who had a big night. Dargan, from Camberley, England, set a personal record in the 3,000 by seven seconds. Dargan’s time of 7:56.93 was good for No. 5 on Stanford’s all-time frosh list, knocking Olympian Gabe Jennings out of the top five.
