COSTA MESA, Calif. – Hitting a season-high .404, No. 10 Stanford defeated Vanguard, 22-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-17, Friday, at the Freed Center for Leadership and Service.
The Cardinal (5-5) used its sixth different starting lineup of the season and was more efficient from the service line, recording eight aces to 13 errors. Vanguard (3-5) hit .325 and finished with 54 kills, 5.0 blocks and four aces.
Opposite Moses Wagner led Stanford with 14 kills on .367 hitting, six digs, two blocks and two aces. Outside hitter Nate Clinton hit a career-high .545 with 13 kills on 22 swings with just one miscue.
Setter Theoren Brouillette controlled the offense with 37 assists. The junior also recorded three kills and five digs to go with a career-best four aces. Libero Evan Porter collected a match-high nine digs.
Freshman middle blocker Reed Wainwright registered eight kills on 11 errorless swings to hit a career-high .727. Freshman David Wolff earned his first start at outside hitter, finishing with six kills, five digs, a block and an ace. Junior Luke McFall added five kills on six swings to hit .833, two blocks and a dig.
Vanguard was led by Grant Dvorak’s match-best 17 kills on .414 hitting. Micah Sybesma chipped in with 12 kills on 17 errorless swings for a .706 attack percentage, three blocks, three digs and an ace.
