CLEMSON, S.C. – No. 16 Stanford made a statement in its first ACC trip to South Carolina, topping Clemson in front of a nearly sold-out crowd on its home turf 196.925-196.575 Sunday afternoon.
Stanford brought home all but one event title in its strong road performance. Senior Brenna Neault won her second consecutive all-around title with a score of 39.250, highlighted by a season-best matching 9.875 on floor. Junior Anna Roberts followed suit with her second consecutive vault title, scoring a 9.925 on the event. Freshman Ui Soma won her first collegiate event title with a new career-best score of 9.950 on bars, while sophomore Sienna Robinson collected her second beam title of the season with her 9.925 anchor routine.
The Cardinal kicked things off on bars, tabbing the season’s third-best bars rotation with a team total of 49.350. Soma’s anchor and event-title-winning performance led the way and was steered by Roberts’ 9.900 in the fifth spot of the lineup. Senior Anapaula Gutierrez led off with a season-best matching 9.875 routine and fellow senior Neault posted a 9.850. Junior Ava Sorrento added the final scoring performance with a 9.775 in the four spot.
It was then off to vault, Stanford’s lowest-scoring rotation of the meet as the Cardinal posted a team total of 49.000. Roberts’ title-clinching vault alongside a debut vault from Soma scoring 9.850 were the best scores of the rotation, while Neault posted a 9.800 and freshmen Kendra Chang and Alana Walker added routines scoring 9.725 and 9.700, respectively.
Stanford’s best rotation of the night came after the halfway point of the meet as the Cardinal’s floor team scored a season-best total of 49.400. Roberts posted her fourth score of 9.925 this season on the event, while junior Claire Dean (season-best), Neault (matched season-best) and Robinson each posted scores of 9.875 and Walker recorded a 9.850 in the third spot.
The Cardinal’s time in Clemson concluded on beam with a team total of 49.175. Robinson’s title-winning 9.925 performance was the only beam routine of the meet to surpass the 9.900 threshold, and fellow sophomore Temple Landry’s 9.875 was good for the tied-for-second-best beam rotation of the meet. Dean started the rotation strong with a 9.825 while junior Ashley Carter posted a 9.800 and Soma rounded out the beam lineup with a 9.750.
Stanford faces a quick turnaround before its next meet, traveling back across the country to play host to current No. 6 California, No. 10 Oregon State and UC Davis for a quad meet Friday, Feb. 28 inside Maples Pavilion. The meet is set for a 7 p.m. start and will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
