REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. -- The Stanford men’s rowing program, 120 years old, opens its season with the Redwood Shores Invitational on Friday and Saturday on its home course.
Seven schools are competing, including Cal, Drexel, Oregon State, San Diego, Santa Clara, and UC San Diego.
Action begins Friday at 4 p.m. with a Stanford dual against Drexel. Racing continues Saturday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on the Belmont Channel/Redwood Shores Lagoon course, and from 9 a.m.-10:40 a.m. on Sunday.
On April 30, 1904, Stanford made its intercollegiate men’s rowing debut in a dual against Cal at the Oakland Estuary. In the 120 years since, men's rowing has established itself as one of the great traditional programs among Stanford sports. Stanford was the first West Coast team to enter the IRA Championships, in 1911.
The Stanford tradition was illustrated by the success of Peter Chatain '22, who earned a bronze medal as part of the U.S. Eights in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games last summer.
Stanford competes against Drexel on Friday, and Oregon State (9 a.m.) and Santa Clara (2:30 p.m.) on Saturday, and San Diego (9:20 a.m.) on Sunday.
The Cardinal returns Tom Corbett, Caspar Griffin, and and Hylton Harvey, who had seats on the 1V8 in every race last season and all are returning. The Cardinal 1V8 reached the AB semifinals at the 2024 IRA Championships and placed 12th overall.
In addition, Stanford brings in a strong group of 11 additions – nine freshmen and two graduate transfers. Six of the freshmen have competed internationally, including Great Britain’s Leopold Hainlein who won gold in the men’s eight at the 2024 World Under-19 Championships in St. Catharines, Canada.
The grad transfers are Adrien Richez from the Naval Academy and Max Shakespeare from Harvard.
