SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Stanford was routed on the road at No. 3 Notre Dame on Thursday night, 96-47.

The 49-point margin of defeat was the largest in program history, surpassing a 45-point loss to No. 7 Long Beach State on March 10, 1983 (96-51).  The Cardinal’s 29 turnovers were one short of tying the school record (30) set four times, most recently against UConn on Dec. 21, 2007.

The game got away from the Cardinal (11-11, 3-8) in the second quarter, when it was outscored 33-7. Notre Dame (20-2, 11-0) closed the period on a 26-2 run over the final 7:44, with Stanford’s only bucket during that time coming on a Shay Ijiwoye layup.

In the first half, Stanford had more turnovers (19) than points (15).

Stanford played without its leading scorer and rebounder, Nunu Agara, who took a hard fall on a drive with 5:01 on the clock in the opening quarter and did not return.

Tess Heal led the Cardinal with 10 points, while freshman Kennedy Umeh had nine rebounds.

Stanford plays next at Louisville on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 9 a.m. PT on ESPN2.
