STANFORD, Calif. - Hosting No. 10 Virginia Tech for the first time as conference foes, No. 17 Stanford fell to the Hokies, 30-13, on Friday in Maples Pavilion.
Stanford (8-3), which won just three of the nine bouts contested, drops to 1-2 in the ACC. Virginia Tech (7-2, 3-1 ACC) won four of its seven bouts by bonus points.
Fifth year Nick Stemmet, ranked No. 22 nationally at 197 pounds, registered the highest-ranked win of his career by knocking off No. 8 Andy Smith, 4-2. Stemmet avenged a loss from last year's NCAA Tournament in which Smith eliminated him just one win away from the Round of 12. Stemmet improves to 15-8 overall and 7-4 in duals this season.
Redshirt sophomore Hunter Garvin opened the dual with an 11-3 major decision over No. 30 Mac Church at 165 pounds. Ranked 14th nationally, Garvin moves to 13-6 overall and 6-2 in duals this season.
Grigor Cholakyan book-ended the night with a fall in 3:48 over Frank DiBella at 157 pounds. Ranked No. 28, the true freshman leads the team with five falls and is now 14-7 overall and 8-3 in duals.
Stanford hits the road next week, traveling to Princeton on Thursday, No. 6 NC State on Friday and Duke on Sunday.
