No. 18 Stanford Clubs Way to Sweep of Duke

Six of Stanford’s 12 hits went for extra-bases in a 10-5 victory

STANFORD, Calif. – Trailing 4-0 headed to the bottom of the third inning, No. 18 Stanford (15-3, 5-1 ACC) slugged its way to a 10-5 come-from-behind victory over Duke (12-9, 2-4 ACC) on Sunday to secure an ACC series sweep of the Blue Devils from Sunken Diamond.

The Cardinal plated five runs in the third and four more in the fourth to quickly complete the comeback.

Trevor Haskins, who celebrated a birthday on Sunday, got the scoring started with a two-run homer in the third inning. The round-tripper was Haskins’ team-leading sixth of the season. Brady Reynolds and Temo Becerra also delivered big two-out extra-base hits in the third inning, with Reynolds shooting an RBI-double down the line in left field before Becerra lofted a triple down the right field line to plate two more and hand the Cardinal the 5-4 lead.

After Duke drew back even with a run in the top of the fourth, Rintaro Sasaki unloaded on a three-run home run to reclaim a Cardinal lead it would not relinquish the rest of the way. For Sasaki, the homer was his third in the last two games.

Junior Jimmy Nati capped the four-run fourth with a solo homer – his second round-tripper in as many days.

Relieving Volchko to start the fifth inning, junior Toran O’Harran worked three shutout innings while striking out four to settle the game down. The right-hander was ultimately credited with the victory and moved to 1-0 on the season.

Senior Ty Uber worked the final two scoreless frames for Stanford, striking out one and allowing just one hit.

Stanford will remain home next week, welcoming California to Sunken Diamond for a three-game ACC series beginning Friday at 6:05 p.m.
