REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – Facing a strong headwind, the Stanford eights kept their perfect season alive by sweeping Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon.
With conditions less than stellar on the Belmont Channel/Redwood Shores Lagoon, the Cardinal 1V8, with Tom Corbett at stroke and freshman Philip Wolfensberger at bow, pushed through to win by 29 seconds, in 6:05.4
The Cardinal 2V8 followed by winning with a 38-second gap over the Broncos, finishing in 6:21.8.
Through three of the four rounds of the Redwood Shores Invitational, Stanford has swept matchups over Drexel, Oregon State, and Santa Clara. The final clash is Sunday against University of San Diego. The 1V8 launches at 9:20 a.m. and the 2V8 at 10.
Stanford stayed with the lineup that beat Oregon State in the Saturday morning session, with the one exception being freshman Andrew Orio placed in the No. 7 seat on the 2V8. It was the first collegiate appearance for Orio, one of nine freshmen on the roster. All have seen action so far, including seven in action against Santa Clara.
