No. 14 Stanford Drops Third Straight

Cal completed a series sweep of Stanford on Sunday afternoon

STANFORD, Calif. – No. 14 Stanford (15-6, 5-4 ACC) led 4-1 after four innings, but California (13-10, 5-4 ACC) drew back even with three in the fifth before eventually earning a 6-5 victory in 10 innings to secure a series sweep of the Cardinal from Sunken Diamond.

Freshman Ethan Kodama contributed the game-winner in the 10th, shooting a two-out single inside the bag at third to chase home PJ Moutzouridis and the game-winning run. Moutzouridis had reached on a single leading off the inning before stealing second base.

Stanford had a number of chances to put the game out of reach, but struggled to get the big hit as it left 13 on base in the setback. Stanford went down in order just three times, stranding multiple runners in the second, third, fourth, sixth and ninth innings.

Trailing by a run in the 10th, Trevor Haskins shot a one-out single into center field, but Rintaro Sasaki and Jimmy Nati each fouled out to end the game.

The hit was Haskins’ third of the day as he finished 3-for-6 with a run scored and one RBI.

The Cardinal trailed 1-0 after a solo homer from Cade Campbell in the first inning, but managed to respond with two runs in the second on an Ethan Hott two-RBI single. The Cardinal advantage stretched to 4-1 on a Haskins single and a sac fly from Nati in the fourth.

After Cal tied the game in the fifth, and took a 5-4 lead in the sixth, Brady Reynolds drew the Cardinal back even with a two-out RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth that ultimately sent the game to extra innings.

Cole Tremain pitched the final two scoreless innings for Cal, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out one to earn the victory and move to 3-1.

Toran O’Harran was saddled with the loss out of the Cardinal bullpen after being charged with the run in the 10th inning following Kodama’s single off Trevor Moore that allowed O’Harran’s inherited runner to plate.

Stanford will have little time to dwell on the sweep, welcoming San Jose State to Sunken Diamond for a 2:05 p.m. first pitch.
