WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Caroline Driscoll secured her team-leading fourth clincher of the season and No. 29 Stanford swept No. 34 Wake Forest on the road on Friday evening.
In her first match as a ranked singles player this season, the newly-minted No. 78 player in the country won it for the Cardinal with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win on court 3. Her victory came less than a minute after Valerie Glozman won her second-set tiebreak on court 2 to beat Anna Zhang 6-2, 7-6 (4).
Valencia Xu, who has flip-flopped with Driscoll in the lineup after battling injury much of the past month, was Stanford’s first singles finisher, beating Kady Tannenbaum 6-2, 6-2 on court 4.
Friday also marked the season debut of two-time All-American Alexandra Yepifanova. The senior was playing her first match for the Cardinal in nearly 11 months after undergoing offseason surgery followed by a quarter abroad. She won her first-set tiebreak on court 5, lost the second 6-1 and was trailing in the third when her match was abandoned.
Doubles victories for Stanford came from Caroline Driscoll and Valencia Xu at No. 2 (6-1) and Glozman and Connie Ma at No. 1 (6-4).
The Cardinal closes the regular season at No. 12 NC State on Sunday at 9 a.m. PT.
