Cardinal Upends No. 4 Clemson

Stanford defeated No. 4 Clemson 11-6 on Sunday in the finale of a three-game ACC series

CLEMSON, S.C. – Stanford’s offense came out swinging on Sunday, plating three runs in the first, two in the fourth, five in the fifth and one in the ninth to take down No. 4 Clemson (33-6, 11-4 ACC) 11-6 on Sunday from Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

The Cardinal (19-14, 6-12 ACC) celebrated Clarke and Elizabeth Nelson Director of Baseball David Esquer’s birthday and snapped an 11-game skid in ACC play in the process.

Senior Trevor Haskins continued his torrid season, finishing 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBIs while finishing a triple short of the cycle for the second straight day.

Haskins’ 11th home run of the season was a two-run shot that broke a 3-3 tie in the fourth.

Junior Jimmy Nati also homered in the victory, sending a pitch out of the stadium for a two-run blast to cap a three-run top of the first inning that also included doubles from Haskins and Temo Becerra.

The home run was Nati’s ninth of the year and his second in the last four games.

Becerra and Nati each drove in three runs on Sunday, with Becerra adding a two-RBI single in the fifth inning before Nati drove in one of his own to help guide Stanford to the five-run frame.

Stanford’s third long ball of the day came in the ninth inning as Brandon Larson laced a pitch 110 miles per hour off the foul pole in right field for his third homer of the season.

Making his ninth start of the season on Sunday, junior Matt Scott gave the Cardinal 5 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits and two walks with six strikeouts. The right-hander improved to 5-2 on the season.

A trio of right-handed relievers carried the Cardinal to the finish line, with Ryan Speshyock striking out Cam Cannarella to strand a pair of runners in the sixth inning after taking the ball from Scott. Toran O’Harran got the next two outs before Aidan Keenan inherited a pair of runners in a 10-5 game in the seventh and worked the final 2 1/3 innings. Keenan struck out two hitters over his stint, allowing just one hit.

Stanford will return to The Farm for the next eight games beginning with a three-game ACC series against Notre Dame beginning Friday at 6:05 p.m.
