SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — On the strength of two season-best’s, Stanford men’s golf took runner-up honors at the 78th Annual Western Intercollegiate on Wednesday, claiming silverware for the second-straight year. Stanford placed all five scoring golfers in the top-40 overall while taking second-place at 1-under and only five strokes back from the win.
Nathan Wang rattled off a season-best 54 holes, ending the tournament in a tie for fifth place at 5-under after a 1-over outing on the final day. Having entered his final nine holes 3-over for the day, Wang secured the top five finish with three birdies in his final six holes to finish the round at 1-over. Shooting a 5-under card of 205, Wang secured his best 56-hole score of the season and his first finish inside the top-10 and top-5.
TK Chantananuwat placed inside the top 10 overall for the second time this season, placing eighth overall while posting a 4-under, 206 through three rounds. Chantananuwat secured six birdies on the afternoon for Stanford, posting a round of 2-under on Wednesday and taking the top spot for the Card on the final day. His three-round score of 206 is the second-lowest posted by the freshman this season.
Finishing the day at 1-under, Logan Kim had a statement round for the Cardinal with a second-place team finish on Wednesday. Kim finished with a season-best 213 through three rounds after posting five birdies on Wednesday which surpassed his combined saved strokes from the previous two rounds by one. Following Kim, Ethan Gao finished third for the Cardinal during Wednesday’s round, posting an even-par round three en route to a top-40 finish, placing 36th at 5-over for the tournament.
Jay Leng secured fourth place in the team spot during round three for the Card, shooting 2-over for the day. Leng, however, secured his third top-20 finish of the year with an even-par 210 card through three rounds which slotted him 19th. Dean Greyserman also shot well for Stanford, placing 83rd with a total tournament score of 230.
Stanford is back in action in one week, heading to The Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Ky., on April 24-28 for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championships. Stroke play begins on Thursday, April 24 and ending on Saturday, April 26 while quarterfinal match play begins on Sunday, April 27.
