STANFORD, Calif. – No. 3 Stanford opened its final weekend of regular-season play on a high note, sweeping Santa Clara 5-0 and taking down No. 9 California 4-1 on Friday at Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium.

The Cardinal improved to 25-8 on the season and completed a regular-season sweep of the Golden Bears, having previously edged California 3-2 on March 8 at The Farm.

Stanford then notched its 14th top-20 victory of the season with a 4-1 win over No. 9 California, handing the Golden Bears their first loss of the season not decided by a 3-2 margin. The Cardinal jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, with its pairs on courts four and two striking first. Belardi and Bell added Stanford’s fourth point with a hard-fought 21-13, 18-21, 15-10 win over Ella Sears and Alexandra Young-Gomez on court three. Cal avoided the sweep with a narrow three-set win on court five, where Marilu Pally and Maile Somera edged Daria Gusarova and Clara Stowell 21-15, 19-21, 15-13.
