Cardinal Coaching Staff Earns WCGA West Regional Coach of the Year Honors

Yim honored as West Regional Coach of the Year, while Smurro, Mossett and Rickard earn Co-Assistant Coaches of the Year awards

STANFORD, Calif. -- Rodgers Family Director of Women’s Gymnastics Tabitha Yim was named the West Region Head Coach of the Year while associate head coach Vince Smurro, Fontaine and Langenfeld Women’s Gymnastics First Assistant Coach Hallie Mossett and assistant coach Caleb Rickard were named the West Region's Co-Assistant Coaches of the Year, the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) announced Wednesday morning.

Yim’s eighth season at the helm of the Cardinal continued her legacy of success that has become expected during her tenure. Stanford finished the regular season ranked No. 13 in the NCAA, six places better than 2024 and the best regular-season final ranking since her time on The Farm began. The 2025 regular season, highlighted by an 18-4 regular season record, culminated in the university’s first ACC team title and the first conference crown for the program since Yim was a student-athlete in 2008. As the Cardinal’s beam coach, Yim led the Stanford lineup to its fourth-best event total in program history (Feb. 7 at California) and grew its national ranking from No. 27 at the beginning of the 2025 campaign to finish as the 12th-best lineup in the NCAA at the end of the regular season.

Stanford’s 2025 season included three regular-season WCGA All-Americans, five ACC Conference Champions (on all four apparatuses and in the all-around competition), seven All-ACC honors, a 10.000 on UB (the first since 2018 on that event), and a top-20 team ranking throughout the entirety of the season, the first in Yim’s career.

The Cardinal’s 2025 success was undoubtedly aided by the teaching and guidance of the 2025 WCGA West Region Co-Assistant Coaches of the Year Smurro, Mossett and Rickard. Smurro, Stanford’s vault and bars coach, led the program to a No. 9 final regular-season ranking on bars, its best since the 2015 season. His lineup earned the program’s second-best team total of 49.650 at the ACC Championship en route to the Cardinal’s first conference title in 17 seasons. The rotation was highlighted by a 10.000 from freshman Ui Soma, the first for the Cardinal on the event since 2018. Throughout the season, he was responsible for the coaching of two of the Cardinal’s WCGA Regular-Season Second Team All-Americans in Soma (bars) and junior Anna Roberts (vault). He also guided junior Taralyn Nguyen to the ACC vault title, Stanford’s first conference champion on the apparatus since 2012 (Ivana Hong, Pac-12).

Mossett made an indelible mark in her third season with the Cardinal as her floor choreography and squad impressed on the conference and national stages. Stanford’s floor squad posted a 49.575 at the ACC Championships, the program’s tied-for-eighth-best team total, highlighted by a conference-title winning routine from Roberts that helped secure the league team crown for the Cardinal. Stanford finished the regular season ranked No. 16 in the nation on floor, up eight spots from 2024 to mark the best regular-season finish under Mossett’s tenure.

Rickard has been an enormous asset for the Cardinal, specifically with his support on both vault and floor. Since his hire in the summer of 2024, Stanford as a team and its individuals produced multiple season and career-high scores and ACC individual conference champions on both events. Both Taralyn Nguyen (9.975) and Anna Roberts (9.950) recorded career-best or matching performances at the ACC Championships, with Nguyen winning sole possession of the apparatus title (the only league crown to be held by a single athlete this season). Under his guidance, he helped improve the vault to its No. 18 final regular-season ranking, up nine spots from the 2024 regular season, while the floor team finished eight spots higher than in 2024 (from No. 24 in 2024 to No. 16 in 2025).

The Cardinal's historic 2025 season came to an end in the 2025 NCAA Regional Championships Second Round in Salt Lake City, Utah, placing third in the night quad against No. 4 Utah, No. 18 Denver and No. 32 BYU. With its efforts in Utah, Stanford finished the season ranked No. 18 in the nation, its fourth consecutive campaign with a top-20 finish.
