Card Essentials: Emily Jones

The Junior outfielder breaks down her everyday essentials ahead of Stanford softball's trip to Oregon for the NCAA Eugene Regional.

Welcome to the latest installment of Card Essentials, where Stanford student-athletes share the stories behind the items they carry every day, big or small. We caught up with Emily Jones, an outfielder and infielder for Stanford softball, as the team rolls into the NCAA Eugene Regional. A First-Team All-Pac-12 selection and NFCA All-Region honoree in 2024, Jones broke out as a leader for the Cardinal, starting all 67 games and leading the team in hits and batting average. Emily took some time to show us what she keeps with her every day, and what each item means to her.

GoStanford.com: Out of everything, what here can't you live without?
Emily Jones: "My coffee, for sure. It is very essential, I get this every single day. It's quite a specific order: I get two shots of espresso with vanilla cream, cold foam, and three pumps of white mocha. It's a pain to order, but I get it every single day.

GS: "We noticed you brought your eyelash curler. What makes that such an essential for you?"
EJ: "My eyelash curler is an everyday essential. I use it literally every single day. If I don’t have it with me, it's over. It’s small, but it seriously makes a difference. I need it on me."

GS: "Every athlete has their thing, especially on game day. Any game-day essentials you’ve got to have?"
EJ: "My batting glove and elbow guard combo. My right-hand batting glove is a must. It's my bottom hand when I swing, so if I don’t have it on, there’s a chance the bat might just fly out. And then there’s my elbow guard. We’re lucky we get to customize them, which makes it even better. I always wear mine to protect against inside pitches. I don’t step into the box without this combo.”

GS: "Okay, we’ve got to ask about the hair clip. It’s always with you. Why is it a must-have for you?"
EJ: "My hair clip is always with me. I never know when I’ll need to throw my hair up, whether it’s for practice, running errands, or just when it starts driving me crazy. It’s one of those little things have to have on hand."

GS: "Let’s talk about your perfume. Why is that something you never skip before heading out the door?"
EJ: "Like most people, I like to smell good. I use this perfume all the time and honestly, I just love the way it smells. It’s one of those things that instantly boosts my mood. Even if I’m just heading to class or grabbing coffee, I always do a quick spritz before I leave. It’s a small part of my routine, but it makes me feel confident."

GS: "You said the water bottle is a recent addition to your essentials. What made it a must-have for you now?"
EJ: "My water bottle, yes. I just got it a couple of days ago, and somehow it’s already become something I have to have with me. My parents and I went to the bookstore on campus, and it caught my eye while we were there. I use it constantly now. It's one of those things where, once you start carrying it, you can’t imagine not having it. Hydration is key, and now this bottle goes with me everywhere."
