CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — On the strength of a banner first collegiate season, Meja Örtengren has been named the WGCA Freshman of the Year, presented by Strackaline.
The ACC Freshman of the Year wins the award at the national level after continuing her strong play from the regular season in the postseason. She finished third at the NCAA Norman Regional and tied for tenth at the NCAA Championship during the stroke play portion.
That capped off an incredible freshman season that saw her compile nine top-10 finishes in nine tournaments while going 4-2 in match play. Her scoring average of 70.11 is the fourth-best in program history by any golfer, scoring at par or better in 24 of 28 rounds while shooting in the 60s on ten occasions. She tied the Stanford single-round record with a 10-under 62 during the San Diego State Classic on the way to her first collegiate win.
Along the way, Örtengren was named All-ACC and a finalist for the ANNIKA Award, given to the best DI women’s golfer in the country.
Örtengren is the fifth Cardinal to win the award and the second in as many seasons, after Paula Martín Sampedro was named Co-Freshman of the Year in 2024. Other Stanford greats to win the award are Andrea Lee, Rachel Heck, and Rose Zhang.
