TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Just four days after defeating then-No. 1 Virginia at home, No. 2 Stanford went on the road and picked up a big 2-1 victory over No. 7 Florida State on Thursday night from the Seminole Soccer Complex.
The victory pushed Stanford to 12-1-1 overall, including a 6-0-1 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Florida State, which had a 33-match home unbeaten streak snapped with the loss, dropped to 8-2-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the ACC.
The Cardinal proved efficient on the attack, putting six of its nine shots on frame, including first-half goals from Andrea Kitahata and Charlotte Kohler.
Kitahata struck quickly in the sixth minute after Shae Harvey dribbled up the middle of field and played a cross toward Jasmine Aikey at the top of the box. Aikey took one touch before playing the ball out left to Kitahata. The native of Hillsborough, Calif. strode into her shot, delivering a right-footed offering into the far corner of the net to collect her eighth goal of the season.
Kohler doubled the Cardinal lead to 2-0 in the 36th minute when Elise Evans sent a long free kick toward the box that was knocked down at the top of the 18. Kohler pounced on the loose ball and hammered a volleyed shot through the mitts of Florida State goalkeeper Addie Todd for her sixth goal of the year.
The Cardinal weathered an offensive storm from the Seminoles that saw the home side deliver 16 shots, including five on goal, to go along with five corner kick chances. Stanford’s defense rallied to the ball throughout the match, forcing deflected shots and limiting the quality chances for the Seminoles. Behind the Cardinal back line, freshman goalkeeper Caroline Birkel was credited with four saves.
Trailing 2-0 entering the 84th minute, and facing a staunch Stanford defense, Florida State did manage to cut the deficit to one on a goal from Jordynn Dudley. Dudley, who finished the match with six total shots, chested home a perfect cross from Solai Washington on the left side of the attack.
The Cardinal will conclude its Florida road trip on Sunday when it visits Miami for a 9 a.m. PT kickoff. The match against the Hurricanes will be broadcast live on ACC Network.
