NORFOLK, Va. – The Cardinal picked up a pair of top-three finishes this weekend, highlighted by Thomas Sitzmann's third-place finish at the ICSA Singlehanded Championship.
Sitzmann finished third behind 40 total points, including five top-five finishes.
"Tommy was thrown into a class with little experience compared to the rest of the fleet and showed what it meant to be a well rounded sailor," said Dale. "He worked hard over the past few weeks dialing in his boat handling which was a major part of his success. Walking away with hardware was a massive achievement. Now he’s setting his sights on the match racing championship next weekend.”
Avery Baldwin finished seventh in the women's competition with 55 points, finishing in the top 10 for six of the seven races and finishing as high as fourth in the final race.
“Avery had her national championship debut and fought hard throughout the event," said assistant coach Augie Dale. "Highlight of the regatta was the last race where she led at the first windward mark. Excited to see what comes from her over following years."
At the West Coast Championships, the Cardinal finished third with 92 points. The A boat of Lucas Woodworth and Kate Myles finished fourth with 57 points, and the B boat of Thomas Whidden and Alice Schmid finished second with 35.
Next up for Stanford is the ICSA Match Race Championship and PCCSC Open Race Championship next weekend.
