Three-Point Barrage Pilots Stanford Past Portland

Stanford improves to 7-1 on the season with the result

STANFORD, Calif. – Returning home to Maples Pavilion after its championship at the Acrisure Invitational, Stanford men’s basketball defeated Portland, 94-72. The Cardinal improves to 7-1 on the year with the victory, while moving to 5-1 in home games.

Stanford had six players in double figures, marking the first time it accomplished the feat since Nov. 13, 2015 in a win over Green Bay. The Cardinal made 14 3-pointers, giving Stanford at least 13 threes in back-to-back games for the first time since at least 2004. The 14 triples, as well as the 11 made in the first half, were the most for Stanford since making a program record 19 threes, and 12 in the first half, on Feb. 10, 2024 against USC.

Jeremy Dent-Smith paced the Cardinal with 16 points, including five 3-pointers, while Benny Gealer and Oskar Giltay had 15 apiece – the latter setting a new career-high. Chisom Okpara had 14 points and Ryan Agarwal and Ebuka Okorie had 10 apiece. The 94 points scored were also a season-high for the Cardinal.

Stanford forced 18 Portland turnovers, which resulted in 33 Cardinal points. The Cardinal tallied 11 steals, giving it double figures in the category for the third time in four games and the fourth time overall this season. Giltay, Dent-Smith, Gealer and AJ Rohosy each had multiple steals on the night.

Portland (5-4) jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, but that would be the only lead the Pilots would hold on the night, as Stanford quickly gained control. Stanford led by double digits for the first time, 27-16, with 9:18 to play in the half, and led by as many as 23 in the period, 49-26, after Dent-Smith’s third 3-pointer of the first half. Stanford held a 20-point advantage at the half, 51-31, giving Stanford its most points in a first half since the aforementioned 2024 win over USC.

The momentum carried into the second half, with Stanford leading by as many as 25 points. Giltay scored nine of his 15 in the second half, and Stanford never wavered in collecting the victory.

Stanford returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 7 at home against UNLV. The 1 p.m. tip will air on ACC Network Extra.
