Leo Young moves to No. 7 on the Stanford Indoor Top-10 list after opening meet in Boston

BOSTON - A new Stanford Top-10 time and three new personal bests highlighted Stanford track and field’s first meet of the season at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener.

Cardinal junior Leo Young ran the fastest 5000m of his career, indoors or outdoors, clocking a 13:30.21 to climb to No. 7 on Stanford’s all-time indoor list after a third-place finish in the opening heat.

Young charged to the lead pack from the gun, holding steady in the top five throughout the entirety of the race before closing with a 28.90 final lap to secure a podium finish behind Louisville’s Elsingi Kipruto and Oklahoma State’s Adisu Guadia.

Sophia Kennedy was selected to participate in the 5000m Invitational as part of FloTrack Night in America’s elite window, where she raced to a 10th-place time of 15:16.20. The race was won by BYU’s Jane Hedengren, who became the first woman in history to break 14:50.00 with a collegiate record-14:44.79.

Julia Flynn recorded a new lifetime-best in the fifth heat of the women’s 5000m, turning in a 16:13.75 to top her previous mark by nearly eight seconds.

Competing unattached, incoming transfer Mena Scatchard set a 13-second PR of 8:47.80 to finish fifth in FloTrack Night in America’s 3000m Invitational. In uniform, Scatchard’s time would have slotted in third in the program’s all-time Indoor list in the event. South Carolina’s Salma Elbadra turned in one of the top performances in NCAA history with a race-winning time of 8:41.76, while six women finished sub-9:00.

Riley Stewart also competed unattached on Saturday, finishing 39th overall in the 5000m after a 15:58.63 effort in heat 5.
