BERKELEY, Calif. – Six Cardinal completed competition at the Cal Winter Invitational on Saturday, combining to go 8-2 in 10 singles matches over two days.
Freshman Tianmei Wang picked up a notable victory on Friday, knocking off 63rd-ranked Naomi Xu of Cal in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Sein Myoung and Emma Sun also picked up wins that afternoon against opponents from Cal Poly. Myoung beat Alexandra Ozerets 6-2, 6-2 and Sun beat Olivia Mlouk 6-3, 6-0.
Caroline Driscoll was added to the singles lineup on Saturday and also nabbed a ranked win over Xu in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. She’s now 3-1 in three setters this season and 9-5 overall in her career.
Wang also beat Saint Mary’s Sofia Daryaie 6-2, 6-2, while Monika Ekstrand, Myoung and Sun were winners, with Myoung doing so in three sets.
Ekstrand beat Ozerets 6-2, 7-5, Myoung beat Cal Poly’s Kennedy Buntrock 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, and Sun beat Cal Poly’s Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako 6-4, 6-1.
The Cardinal had three doubles wins on Saturday from the pairs of Myoung and Sun, Driscoll and Ekstrand, and Morgan Shaffer and Wang. Those same pairs lost their doubles matches on Saturday.
Stanford returns to dual-match action when it travels to Norman, Okla. to face Yale in the opening round of ITA Kickoff Weekend on Friday, Jan. 23 at 10 a.m. PT/noon CT.
