Heartbreak in Surprise

No. 12 Oregon State walked off with a 3-2 victory over Stanford

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Knotted at two runs apiece headed to the bottom of the ninth inning, No. 12 Oregon State (2-1) walked off with a 3-2 victory over Stanford (1-2) on Sunday afternoon to conclude the Cardinal’s weekend at the College Baseball Series – Surprise.

Josh Proctor delivered the game-winner, shooting a single into right field to chase home Cooper Vance from second base. Vance had reached on a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the ninth.

Oregon State took advantage of a trio of Cardinal errors to jump out to a 2-0 lead after three frames. The first came in the bottom of the first as an errant double play turn from Jimmy Nati at second base allowed a runner to score. Oregon State would add one more in the third as Tyler Inge reached on a throwing error by JJ Moran at third base before scoring on an errant pickoff attempt from Cardinal starter Parker Warner.

Warner received a no decision after allowing the two unearned runs on two hits and a walk with five strikeouts over four innings.

The Cardinal managed to draw even in the fourth inning as freshman Brock Sell delivered a clutch two-out, two-RBI double into the right-center field gap to chase home Rintaro Sasaki and Moran.

Stanford’s starting third baseman, Moran finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Freshman Colt Peterson was first arm out of the Cardinal bullpen, tossing a scoreless fifth inning, before senior Toran O’Harran worked the next 2 2/3 scoreless in his season debut.

Left-hander Mike Erspamer, who earned a save in Friday’s victory over No. 24 Arizona, recorded the final out of the eighth before issuing a pair of walks and allowing the walk-off single in the ninth.

The Cardinal will return to action on Monday when it travels to Scottsdale, Ariz. to meet Nebraska for a 12 p.m. PT first pitch.
