Virginia Tops Stanford 75-69

Agara scores 21 in first appearance since January 25

STANFORD, Calif. – Nunu Agara returned to the lineup and scored 21 points, but the Cardinal lost to Virgina at home on Sunday afternoon 75-69.

Making her first appearance since January 25, Agara was 6-of-16 from the floor, 9-of-10 at the line, and had five rebounds. She was one of four in double figures along with Hailee Swain (13), Chloe Clardy (12) and Courtney Ogden (10). Swain also added six boards and a career-high five steals.

Stanford led 17-16 with 6:42 to go in the second quarter, but the trailed much of the game until Swain made a driving layup to tie it 62-62 and Agara made a pair at the line to put Stanford on top 64-62 with 4:25 remaining. Swain’s layup would be the team’s last field goal, as the Cardinal missed its last eight attempts over the final four minutes. Virginia closed on a 13-5 run to seal it.

Kymora Johnson led the Cavaliers with 25 points and was 12-of-12 at the line. Virginia made 28-of-32 on free throws, while Stanford was 15-of-20.

Stanford got back into it in the fourth with a 13-1 run over 4:48 that flipped a 61-51 deficit into a 64-62 advantage after Agara’s free throws. Lara Somfai hit two buckets, Ogden nailed a 3-pointer and Swain made a pair of layups. Virginia’s only point during the stretch came on a Gabby White free throw with 5:46 left.

The Cardinal was done in by a second quarter in which it was outscored 25-15. After starting the game 4-of-6 from the floor over the first four minutes, Stanford would make just three of its next 20 attempts.
