Two Wins to Open the Spring

Cardinal finished first at Bryson Women’s Fleet Race, Top-9 Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. – The Cardinal opened the Spring season with a pair of wins this weekend, taking first in the Bryson Women’s Fleet Race and Top-9 Invite.

“It was a good opener for our season. The strength of a team is more about the level of the group as a whole than the level of our best sailors. I feel this is where we are most different than our competition – no weak links. I think last weekend demonstrated that,” said head sailing coach Chris Klevan. “I'm proud of the energy and the stick-with-it-ness those sailing and working the regatta brought to the weekend.”

The Top-9 Spring Invite featured combined scoring, and both Cardinal boats landed in the top three. Stanford’s A boat of Thomas Whidden, Amiya Stroumza, Freddie Parkin and Abby Baird finished first with 52 points, while the B boat of Dylan Sih, Caroline Geiger and Alexandra Jones took third with 62.

One of the two Cardinal boats finished first in 10 of the 14 races – the A boat taking seven and the B boat three.

At the Bryson Women’s Fleet Race, the Card boats again finished first and second in combined scoring.

The A boat of Samara Walshe, Kate Myles, Alice Schmid and Piper Blackband took first with 28 points, winning seven of the 14 races. The B boat consisted of Callie Hammond, Avery Baldwin and Kit Harned, and finished second with 48 points.

The Cardinal is back next weekend with the McIntyre Open Team Race on Feb. 21-22.
