Scoresheet Opens in a new window

STANFORD, Calif. – No. 1 Stanford used a second-half surge to outlast No. 5 Arizona State 16-11 on Saturday afternoon in the MPSF opener for both teams at Avery Aquatic Center.

Tied 7-7 at halftime, Stanford (7-0, 1-0 MPSF) outscored Arizona State (18-2, 0-1 MPSF) 9-4 over the final two periods to pull away for the win.

The Cardinal’s top two scorers were unstoppable throughout the match. Juliette Dhalluin, who recorded her fourth hat trick of the season while extending her streak of scoring at least twice in every game, matched a career high with six goals to go along with three assists.

Meanwhile, Jenna Flynn, who has achieved a hat trick in all but one game this season, contributed four goals to increase her team-leading total to 27 while also dishing out five assists.

That type of scoring punch was just what the Cardinal needed against the Sun Devils, who entered the game as the MPSF’s most high-powered offense, led by conference scoring leader Millie Quin’s 74 goals.

Stanford raced out to a 5-2 lead after one period, thanks to a pair of goals from Dhalluin over the first eight minutes.

Arizona State countered in the second quarter, outscoring Stanford 5-2 to force a 7-7 tie at intermission. The Sun Devils briefly moved in front 7-6 at the 1:57 mark before Dhalluin completed her hat trick with 41 seconds left before the break.

Momentum shifted in the third period, with Flynn and Kamryn Barone scoring 40 seconds apart to lead 9-7 at the 6:04 mark.

After Quin scored on a penalty to trim the lead to 9-8, Stanford scored four more goals in the period, culminating with Lucy Haaland-Ford’s goal with 14 seconds left.

Serena Browne found the cage twice in the fourth quarter to help preserve the victory.

Christine Carpenter played the entire game in goal and made 11 saves.

Stanford returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 28, at San Jose State at 1 p.m.

Stanford Goals: Juliette Dhalluin (6), Jenna Flynn (4), Serena Browne (2), Kamryn Barone (1), Lucy Haaland-Ford (1), Quinn Healy (1), Claire Minton (1).
